Elections Aftermath

In the aftermath of the election I have been thinking more and more about the role of white folks, and white aspiring allies and accomplices specifically, in this moment. As we saw the increase in the percentage of white women who voted for Trump between 2016 and 2020, it is crystal clear that white folks are not doing our part to move our country towards justice.

As I sit with these reflections I have been connecting back to more personal sides of my work. Much of my work towards becoming an ally and accomplice has happened on a very personal level - through coaching, therapy, hard accountability conversations, and on my meditation mat. While much of my outward-facing work centers around my research and the scholarship of so many others, more and more I am connecting back to these personal practices as the bridge between the scholarship and how I put it all into practice. And in turn, I've been engaging more and more with folks who have read the books and taken the workshops, but are meeting the next barriers of this work -- old conditioning (being nice, seeking harmony and consensus, avoiding conflict, etc.), limiting beliefs (there's nothing that I can do to actually change things here), a lack of confidence, and lots of fear. Can you relate to some of these barriers? I know that they're all familiar parts of my journey!

If this resonates with you, let me know! But also, stay tuned for a new coaching program (or programs?) coming in early 2021. Through these programs, we will take a deeper dive into the self-work required for effective allyship and accomplices. The reality is that white supremacy harms all of us, and for white folks, we have to really engage with the ways that it has harmed our humanity, our bodies, our thought processes, and our belief patterns. I'm working on some ways that we can engage in purposeful collective healing so that we can show up as active participants towards liberation and not performative social media allies! I hope you'll join me, or minimally share your thoughts and feedback with me! Is this resonating with you? What are some of the barriers that you've encountered in this work as a white person?
